Ayodhya Dispute: How it All Began

The Babri mosque dates back nearly 500 years when it was built in Ayodhya by Mir Baqi, a commander of first Mughal emperor Babur, in 1528. Hence the mosque's name -- Babri Masjid.

1853: First recorded incident of Hindu-Muslim violence over the site with Hindus alleging the mosque was built on the site of a razed Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Ram.

1859: British erect a fence and allow Muslims and Hindus to worship separately in the inner and outer courtyards.

1885: The dispute is dragged to court for the first time when Mahant Raghubar Das files a suit in a Faizabad court seeking permission to build a Ram temple adjoining the Babri mosque.

Dec 23, 1949: About 50 Hindus allegedly sneak in idols of Lord Ram in the mosque under the central dome. This leads to daily Hindu prayers at the site. Muslims stop offering namaz.

Jan 16, 1950: Gopal Singh Visharad files suit in Faizabad city court seeking exclusive rights to perform prayers for "Ram Lalla". He also seeks judicial restraint on the removal of idols.

Dec 5, 1950: Mahant Paramahans Ramchandra Das files suit to continue with the Hindu prayers and keeping the Ram idols at the Babri mosque, which he calls a "structure".

Dec 17, 1959: Nirmohi Akhara files suit seeking transfer of disputed site.

Dec 18, 1961: Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Board of Waqf files suit seeking possession of Babri mosque site.

1984: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) launches a campaign to open the locks of Babri mosque so as to "liberate" the birthplace of Ram and build a grand temple.

Feb 1, 1986: Faizabad district judge allows Hindus to worship at the site. Locks are re-opened. Angry Muslims set up Babri Mosque Action Committee in protest.

June 1989: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) gives formal backing to VHP, giving renewed life to the temple movement.

July 1, 1989: Fifth suit filed in the name of Bhagwan Ram Lalla Virajman.

Nov 9, 1989: The Rajiv Gandhi government permits 'shilanyas', or ground-breaking ceremony near the Babri mosque.

Sep 25, 1990: BJP president L.K. Advani launcheS Rath Yatra - from Somnath in Gujarat to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, raising passions all over the country. Communal riots follow.

November 1990: Advani arrested in Samastipur in Bihar. BJP withdraws support to Prime Minister V.P. Singh, whose government is propped by Left and BJP. V.P. Singh resigns.

October 1991: Kalyan Singh government in Uttar Pradesh acquires 2.77 acres of land around Babri mosque.

Dec 6, 1992: Thousands massed at Ayodhya demolish the Babri mosque, triggering widespread communal riots. A makeshift Ram temple is hurriedly built. Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao vows to rebuild the mosque.

Dec 16, 1992: M.S. Liberhan Commission set up to probe the circumstances leading to the mosque razing.

January 2002: Prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee sets up an Ayodhya Cell in his office to talk to Hindu and Muslim leaders to resolve the dispute.

April 2002: Three high court judges begin hearings on determining who owns the Ayodhya site.

March-August 2003: Archaeological Survey of India excavates in Ayodhya on the directions of the Allahabad High
Court. It claims to have found an evidence of a temple beneath the mosque. Muslims dispute the findings.

September 2003: A court rules that seven Hindu leaders should stand trial for inciting the mosque demolition.

October 2004: Advani reiterates the BJP's "unwavering" commitment to building a temple at Ayodhya.

July 2005: Suspected Islamic militants attack the site, using a jeep packed with explosives. Security forces kill five attackers.

June 2009: The Liberhan Commission submits report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh -- 17 years after its

September 28 : Supreme Court gives go-ahead for Allahad High Court judgement on Sep 30, rejecting appeals for deferment.

Aadhaar: How to get your unique ID from govt of India

India's ambitious Unique ID project dubbed "Aadhaar", which aims to give every Indian citizen a unique number mapped to biometrics, was launched on Wednesday in the Nadurbar district of Maharashtra. The team got a sneak peek at the UIDAI (Unique ID Authority of India) tech centre in Bangalore, to tell you everything you need to know about the enrolment process.

The setup

The enrollment officer (EO) sits at right angles to you and enters data into a laptop. The insight of the Aadhaar team here is that the person getting enrolled must see what is being entered. Thus there's a monitor in front of you, which mirrors the enrolment officer's screen so that you can point out spelling mistakes or other errors. If the person getting enrolled is illiterate, he or she can nominate someone to accompany and verify. There's a small laser printer behind the EO's laptop and a webcam, fingerprint reader and iris scanner account for the remainder of the hardware setup. Unless, of course, you count the light bulb hanging from the ceiling and a white "roll-up" chart behind you for the "passport photo studio" effect!

Compulsory information

Name (first and last name compulsory but middle name optional), Gender (Male/Female/Transgender) and Date of Birth are the compulsory fields. Whereas postal address is also required, it's more for the sake of mailing your UID number than strictly being a proof of residence. The EO asks you for a PIN code and the city/district fields are automatically populated. The rest of the address is entered manually.

Supporting documents

The UID team acknowledges the fact that a large number of people may not have any supporting documents to prove their identity. In this case, one is allowed to bring another resident who is already in possession of an Aadhaar number to be an "introducer" by vouching for the person seeking to enroll. Of course, there is scope for fraud either with a colluding introducer or by just using fake supporting documents. However, the whole point of Aadhaar is that one can only fake one's identity once and this prevents large-scale "ghost identity" creation, which is the bane of most Indian government schemes. The great PAN (Permanent Account Number with the Income Tax department) card scam after all involved a single person creating thousands of different PAN numbers.

A photograph is taken of the person getting enrolled, purely for the purpose of printing it out on the enrolment receipt, so that illiterate residents have some way of knowing that the receipt indeed belongs to them. Beyond that, the photograph serves no biometric or authentication purpose.

First there's an iris scan where you look into a binocular-like device held up to your eyes by the EO. After that it's the four fingers of each hand, followed by both thumbs (a process familiar to those entering the US) for your 10 fingerprints.

The wait

The EO makes you review the data entered one final time before giving you a laser-printed receipt. Whereas the residents of Tembhali, the "Aadhaar village", were to get their numbers today, the rest of us won't be that lucky. We'll only get to walk away with our receipts and have to wait for the actual number to be delivered by IndiaPost!

Supreme Court defers Ayodhya verdict by one week - Hindustan Times

Supreme Court defers Ayodhya verdict by one week - Hindustan Times

he Supreme Court on Thursday deferred the Allahabad High Court verdict on Ayodhya title suit by one week. The verdict was due to be pronounced tomorrow. The Apex court issued notices to contesting parties on the petition seeking stay on the Allahabad High Court order which refused to defer the verdict in the suit.

The court has fixes September 28 as next date of hearing. Giving its decision the Supreme Court said that the deferment is in public interest.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court had deferred hearing on a plea to postpone the Allahabad High Court verdict on the Ayodhya title suit after a bench said it did not have the "determination" to take up the matter. The bench while refusing to hear the petition filed by retired bureacrat Ramesh Chand Tripathi.

Tripathi had approached the Apex court five days after a three-judge Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court rejected his petition for deferring the verdict and to allow mediation to find a solution to the 60-year-old Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit dispute.

Pavan Tanay Sankat Harana Mangala Murati Roop

Ram Lakhan Sita Sahita Hriday Basahu Soor hoop

English Translation of The Hanuman Chalisa

The dust of guru’s lotus feet having,

I cleanse the mirror of my soul sparkling,

Raghuvar’s spotless glory I be singing,

The four fruits of life it ever is giving.

I am void of all the wisdom but so realizing,

On the son of the wind am meditating,

Strength, wisdom, knowledge be his blessing,

Of the suffering and sin - may he be removing.

Victory to Lord Hanuman ocean of wisdom and virtue,

Hail the Monkey lord, illuminator of the three worlds.....(1)

Ram’s emissary, abode of matchless power,

Anjani's son, named 'Son of the Wind'......(2)

Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt,

Remover of evil thoughts and companion to the good.....(3)

Golden–hued and splendidly adorned,

With heavy earrings and curly locks......(4)

In your hands shine mace and banner,

A sacred thread adorns your shoulder.....(5)

You are Shiva's son and Kesari's joy,

Your glory is revered throughout the world......(6)

Supremely wise, virtuous and clever,

You are ever intent on Lord Ram's work.....(7)

You delight in hearing of the Lord's deeds,

Ram, Lakshman and Sita dwell in your heart......(8)

Assuming a tiny form you appeared before Sita,

Yet you burnt Lanka in an awesome form.....(9)

Taking dreadful form you slaughtered demons,

And completed Lord Ram's mission......(10)

Bringing the magic herb 'Sanjeevan', you revived Lakshman

And Lord Ram embraced you with delight.....(11)

Greatly did Lord Raghu praise you-,

“You as dear to me as my brother, Bharat!”......(12)

"May the thousand mouth serpent sing your glory",

So saying Sripathi, Sita's husband, drew you to himself.....(13) [[Ravi Manda: the above may be incorrect -[edited: Umesh] sahas badan - is my entire body; tumro jas gave - is hails your glory throughout. as kahi sripathi kanth lagaavein - this literally indicates that Rama is Vishnu's avatar. Sri means Lakshmi, hence Sripathi is Vishnu.]]

Sanak and the great sages, Bhrama, and the holy saints,

Along with Narada, Sarasvati and the king of serpents......(14)

Yama, Kubera and the guardians of the quadrants,

Poets and scholars- none can truly express your glory.....(15)

You rendered great service to Sugriva,

Bringing him to Lord Ram - you gave him kingship......(16)

Vibhishana heeded your counsel,

And became Lanka's King, as all the world knows.....(17)

Though the sun is thousands of miles away,

You swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.....(18)

Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth,

You leapt across the Ocean - not surprisingly.....(19)

Every arduous task in this world,

Becomes easy, by your grace......(20)

You the guardian of Ram's gate,

None enters without your consent .....(21)

All bliss one finds when taking refuge in you,

When you are there to protect why should one fear?.....(22)

You alone can withstand your splendor,

The three worlds tremble with your roar.....(23)

Ghosts and goblins dare not come near,

When your name Great hero - 'Mahavir' is uttered......(24)

All Illness and pain is destroyed,

Who repeat your name brave Hanuman ever unceasingly.....(25)

Hanuman frees one from all the calamity,

Who remember him in thought, word and deed......(26)

Ram the renunciate reigns over all,

And you carry out his every task.....(27)

Whoever yearns for you will undoubtedly be,

Sipping nectar (an abundant life) through life contently......(28)

Your splendor fills the four ages,

With your glory you enlighten the world.....(29)

You are the guardian of saints and sages,

The destroyer of demons, darling of Lord Ram .....(30)

You of eight siddhis nine nidhis giver be,

As Mother Janki gave this boon happily.....(31)

You the store-house of Ram’s love surely,

Remaining Ram’s servant ever unceasingly......(32)

Singing your praise, one finds Ram,

Destroying the sorrows of countless lives past .....(33)

At death one goes to Ram's own abode,

Ever to be known as Hari’s devotee......(34)

There is no need to give thought to any other deity,

Serving Hanuman, one gains all delight.....(35)

All affliction ceases, all pain is removed,

By remembering the mighty Hero, Hanuman......(36)

Victory! Victory! Victory! to Lord Hanuman,

Be merciful as the divine master .....(37)

Who ever recites this a hundred times,

Is released from all bondage and gains bliss ......(38)

Those reciting the `Hanumanchalisa’,

Attains success – Gauri's Lord (Lord Shiva) bears witness .....(39)

Says Tulsidas, ever Lord Hari's servant,

"Lord please reside in my heart".....(40)

`Pavanputra’ – of all calamities you dispelling,

The very embodiment of all the blessings,

King of immortals, in my heart be dwelling,

With Ram, Laxman and Sita be ever residing
